Skin Care Tips: Change Your Routine As The Seasons Change

Change your routine as the seasons change: Winter Skin Care Tips

Cold outside and the heat indoors create dehydration and dryness. It is very important that you are aware of this transition and you are adjusting your  home care regimen appropriately. Even oily skin experiences dehydration.

Dehydration vs Dryness

Winter Skin Care Tips

The difference between dehydration and dryness is that dryness is an issue where your oil glands just do not produce enough oil or any at all. When this is the case, you must use products that can layer and protect your skin from harmful environments and bacteria. You should use cleansers that are creamy, milky like lotions. They will remove the dirt from the surface but keep intact the sensitive top layers of your skin. Use gentle toners that will maintain the PH balance and plenty of moisturizer, eye cream, and sunscreen.

Dehydration is a surface level issue.

Your skin does produce oil, but lacks water. Drinking a bunch of water daily can help but you want to make sure that you are using proper skin care as well. If you have an oily skin type then you will want to use gel cleansers and exfoliants regularly. For those who have acne, you may need something stronger with antibacterial properties.

It’s always important to switch the products we use from summer to the colder months to ensure the skin stays nice and hydrated all winter long. Here are a few more tips to keep your skin healthy and moisturized:

  • Use a humidifier in your home. The dry air inside your home can strip your skin of its natural oils, so using a humidifier can help to add moisture to the air and keep your skin hydrated.
  • Avoid taking long, hot showers. Hot water can also strip your skin of its natural oils, so it’s best to take shorter, cooler showers.
  • Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing or showering. This will help to lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated, I like to add a little oil to my moisturizer for the body.
  • Choose a moisturizer that is right for your skin type. If you have oily skin, look for a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. If you have dry skin, look for a richer moisturizer.
  • Exfoliate regularly. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and reveal the fresh, new skin underneath. Exfoliate 2-3 times per week using a gentle exfoliator. Antioxidant Scrub
  • Protect your skin from the sun. Even on cloudy days, the sun’s harmful UV rays can damage your skin. Be sure to wear sunscreen every day, even in the winter. Broad Spectrum SPF

Some of our favorite products to use during the colder months

PCA Skin is a fabulous brand we use to balance the oil and water levels in the skin. Their oil cleanser works wonderfully to remove any dirt and oil while making sure not to disrupt the sensitive stratum cornium.

One of our best sellers is the Daily Cleansing Oil. Excellent for dehydrated skin that is oily, combo, or normal.

Grape Seed Oil –  an ingredient that contains polyphenols as well as the essential fatty acid (EFA) linoleic acid for lightweight hydration.

Sweet Almond Oil –  an emollient and moisturizing agent that calms irritation and helps the skin retain moisture.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E) –  an excellent antioxidant and emollient that protects the lipids in the body, including cell membranes, from free radical damage.
